7 Ways to Fall Asleep
71Many people find it hard to fall asleep in the evening. You probably experienced this yourself. But while most people's sleeping problems are only temporary, others suffer from it on a daily basis.
This can lead to anxiety and insomnia and many people don't take it serious. This probably stems from the fact that there are many easy solutions to sleep problems (like the ones you will find in this article). But if you have a real sleep disorder, the simple things sadly aren't enough. If this is the case you should look for a doctor and get into sleep treatment.
So here are my tips:
1. Stop trying
This basically is the best piece of sleep information you will find. If you can't sleep, the worst thing you can do is trying too hard. You can't force it. Don't think about how bad you want to sleep, think about something else. Just let it go, you will fall asleep sooner or later.
This is also true for many other activities, but it probably has its biggest effects when it comes to sleeping.
2. Calm down
As I said, you shouldn't focus on falling asleep. So what should you think about? You probably won't fall asleep when you think about something important that keeps your mind active and is very thought provoking. On the other hand, if you think about something boring, chances are that you will fall asleep soon. But you don't have to bore yourself, you can just think about something calm and relaxing (examples: a day at the beach or in the mountains, a sea with a small boat on it, etc.).
3. Meditation
Meditation is a great way to calm your mind. Many people, especially beginners, tend to fall asleep during meditation. Of course this isn't the point of meditating, but it's a great side-effect if you have problems falling asleep. However, if you stay awake and you do it the right way, it will calm your mind and put you in a state where it will be very easy for you to fall asleep.
4. Exercise
Exercise has many great health benefits. One of them is that it will help you to fall asleep. It will make you feel more awake during the day and thus you will be more tired at night and fall asleep faster. But that's only one of the many great benefits of exercise. It will improve your overall wellbeing and should be done at least three times a week.
5. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and other drugs
Caffeine, alcohol or other drugs destroy your body's natural sleep rhythm. They also have other negative side effects and should be avoided. While caffeine just prevents you from falling asleep, the effects of alcohol can be very severe: dehydration is just one of them.
6. Read a book or watch TV
Reading a book or watching a TV show or movie is a great way to relax and forget the troubles of your daily life. If there are things that worry you and keep you from falling asleep, this is one of the most important point for you. Make sure that you read or watch something that fascinates you and takes you to another world and lets you forget your own worries. Harry Potter or The Lord of the Rings are two great examples.
7. Avoid distractions
Do you sleep in a room that is pitch dark or do you still see the streetlights and hear the sounds from outside? This are two very obvious reasons for sleep problems. Just make sure that there is nothing to distract you. Especially light can be very counter-productive if you want to fall asleep. If there is no way to keep lights and sounds out, just buy earplugs and a sleeping mask.
